Faith Ringgold grew up in the Harlem district of New York City in the 1930’s. She was always known as the best artist in her class and she loved to draw and paint. Her mother taught her how to sew at a young age, and Faith enjoyed creating her own designs with needle and thread. Later in life, Faith became a schoolteacher and worked on her own paintings. Her worked was inspired by her African-American heritage. She also started to incorporate fabric, beads, and stitched cloth in her paintings. Faith is best known for her beautiful story quilt paintings that are now part of museum collections all over the world. 2nd Grade students created their own square that represented something about themselves. We combined all of them to make our own Story Quilt in the hallway of the Lower School.
